Instructions for uploading your own maps

As I said on the handout, many of you may find it advantageous to use a map you have created yourself or sourced from a book or website, rather than just drawing on Google Maps. The instructions for adding that map to your exhibit are as follows:

  1. Locate (and if necessary digitize) an appropriate map. Larger resolutions are better, since they will permit users to zoom in further on your exhibit. Save the image to your hard drive in either .jpg or .png format (.tiff will NOT work with Neatline).
  2. Log in to Neatline.
  3. At the top-left of the page, click on the tab labelled Items.
  4. Under Items, look over to the top-right, underneath the menu bar, and click on the button that says Add an item.
  5. On the following page, type a name for your map into the box labelled Title. You can fill out the other boxes if you wish, and it may be advisable to fill out Source and Contributor at the very least.
  6. When you have put all the requisite info into the boxes, look at the menu running down the left-hand side of the page, and click on Files.
  7. Now click the button labelled Choose file, and locate the file on your hard drive.
  8. Click the green button labelled Add Item on the bottom-right.
  9. Now navigate your way back to the list of Neatline exhibits by choosing Neatline from the menu at the top of the page.
  10. Locate your exhibit in the list, and click Edit Details (the link appears under the name of your exhibit in the list).
  11. Look for where it says (Optional):Static Image, and click the bubble to its right. The image you uploaded should appear in the list that drops down. Select it.
  12. Click the green button labelled Save Neatline on the bottom-right.
  13. Head over to your exhibit and behold the glory!
